Every acute care hospital accredited by The Joint Commission is required to have a mechanism in place for handling ethical issues that arise in patient care. Congregate living arrangements for older persons, including Assisted Living, encounter many of the same ethical issues that come up in hospitals, as well as some ethical issues that are unique to these settings. This talk will explore the ethical challenges involved in providing residential care to our aging population and provide an overview of possible approaches to incorporate and standardize appropriate resources to meet these challenges.
