Despite decades of public education about advance care planning and health care directives, many patients and families remain unprepared cognitively, emotionally and spiritually. Palliative Care focuses on improving the quality of life of people with serious illnesses. It helps them find relief from the symptoms and stress that might be related to having a serious illness. Palliative care also provides support to family and loved ones. Hospice care reflects the belief that quality of life should be encouraged and supported when quantity of life is limited. The Hospice philosophy embraces the right to experience relief from physical, spiritual and emotional pain that frequently accompanies a life-limiting illness. Rev. Paul Galchutt and Dr. Drew Rosielle will share their perspectives as a former palliative care chaplain and physician on helping patients and families prepare for the end-of-life.
